In a SAFF U-17 Men’s Championship 2024 match in the tight-knit competition, Pakistan outplayed Nepal in a 1-0 win in Changlimithang Stadium at the Bhutanese capital. It proved well as to how both the teams have strategized and the intense first half of the match ended in a draw with scores of 0-0 while the Nepalese team possessed the highest ball possession. So, Pakistan planned to have an aggressively defensive formation, it paid off when Muhammad Talha made the match-winning goal in the 81st minute.
During the first half of the match Nepal had a stronger attacking formation and more than half of the match half was taken by midfield. However, Pakistan’s defense was solid and did well under pressure and when to counterattack effectively. The Nepalese forward's width of the effort could not penetrate through the Pakistani defense line.
The crucial moment of the match came in the 81st minute when Pakistan capitalized on a corner kick. Muhammad Talha rose above the Nepalese defense to head the ball into the net, securing the win for his team. Despite Nepal’s efforts to respond by increasing their offensive pressure and delivering crosses into the box, Pakistan’s defense held firm.
Pakistan’s basic defense also negates Nepal's direct threat with timely slide blocks and compact formation that restricted the Nepals from advancing in the final third of the field. Despite dominating the game in terms of possession most of the time, Nepal did not unleash many chances to threaten in the opposition’s box. Pakistan was packed too defensively and Nepal had no choice but to continuously shoot from the distance and crosses which were comfortably neutralized.
Some of the important performers included Muhammad Talha who was uniquely goal-oriented for his Pakistan team to secure a place at the next level of the competition apart from Pakistan’s goalkeeper who made some fine saves in both halves that clinched his team a big win. The Nepali midfield was relatively compact and also had better ball control than the Pakistanis but they failed to overcome the Pakistani defensive line.
It will put Pakistan again in a better position for the remaining matches of the SAFF U-17 Championship 2024 which can help in building a base for the next matches. Nepal will be disappointed but they will have no option but to try and solve the problems in the attacking department as they look forward to other matches. Both of them will be focusing on the strategies to employ and on the opportunities therein to make the desirable impact on youth football in the South Asian region.
